Love This Idea - WPTavern’s BuddyPress Post

So, BuddyPress 1.0 has been released and there are many, many blogs who have written on the topic. Luckily, this is not one of them.  I want to show an example of a blog post about BuddyPress that is different enough to make you feel like it’s not about BuddyPress. The blog post that I am talking about if from WPTavern: BuddyPress Hits One Point Oh.

WPTavern still got the buzz word out “buddypress” but did it in a way that didn’t make me skip the post immediately.  At this point in time, I have read a few (sixish) articles on the release of BuddyPress from many different resources, so once I saw the title of Jeffro’s article, I almost didn’t read it.  But his first line saved the article.  He took the point of view of congratulating specific people on the BuddyPress team creating a new dynamic to his blog post.  No longer was this a blog post about the release of BuddyPress, which I have read and probably would have skipped, but it was different!

Why I wrote this post:  I feel that it is important to bloggers to take major events that they wish to blog about and put their own individual twist on it.  Please do something different than writing a blog post saying BuddyPress 1.0 is out; make it interesting to read.

The Changes to Drink Some More

I am in the process of changing Drink Some More to be more of a drink recipe and alcohol review blog in hopes to narrow the scope of the blog down making me willing to write more.  Many things have gone through my head as to what I should do with Drink Some More and what I should change on the blog.  And then I read this article on Daily Blog Tips [http://www.dailyblogtips.com/how-frequently-should-i-change-my-wordpress-theme/]

The article speaks of why you shouldn’t change your theme too often.  So i have come to the conclusion that I am not going to change the theme of Drink Some More, and I am going to keep what theme was up there even though the blog is going through a re-birthing…

What do you think?  Do you think that changing your blog’s theme often weakens your brand or do you think that it is okay to change your theme?  I agree with Daniel, the author of Daily Blog Tips and feel that changing your blog’s theme too often can confuse people and detract from your blog’s identity.

Keeping Hope Up

So far, my journey to creating a world-class blogging network has been less than stellar. In fact, it has all but stalled. Yes, this is due to the underwhelming post count on all my blogs and my complete lack of networking, but when I read articles like this one found on Paid Content (first found on ProBlogger)I just have to smile.

Of course not everyone is going to have such a large payout. In fact, I am confident in saying that my blogging network, if I keep up with this current posting count, will all but falter. However, there is money out there for bloggers. And knowing this, it makes me just want to try harder.

Needing to work harder in everything one does is definitely the overlying lesson people need to learn; a lesson I need to learn. Nothing comes easy; nothing comes automatic. You need to work for everything that is given to you, and I have not been trying hard enough.

Hopefully this story makes me turn over a new leaf; hopefully I can get this blogging network back on track!

Embedded Google Maps Different?

So, I started my Internet and GIS class today at CCSU.  What does this have to relate to blogging in any way?  Well, we were shown Google Maps (Yes, this is very basic, but it is the first day of class!) and my professor made a quick website with an embedded Google map.  However, once we loaded the website, I was shocked to see that the embedded Google map was different than the one shown on maps.google.com!  Look at the below examples:

Notice how Wells Street still exists on the embedded version and not on the online version. Wells Street was removed a few years ago!

Now, why is this important to bloggers?  Well, how many times have you embedded a map into your website?  If you are like me, you have done it often.  And how many times did you check what the embedded map looks like?  Again, if you are like me, probably not that often!  Be carefule when embedding maps using Google Maps!

I am surprised that the maps are different.  With my little knowledge of online map programs, I would have thought that these maps were coming from the same server, but I guess not.

So be forwarned.  If you plan on using an embedded map from Google Maps, you are NOT getting the most updated version!

The Power of Comments

It is amazing.  Having a comment left on your blog is such an amazing thing.  Here I am having not posted on The Bread Bible and I for over 2 months (mostly due to the fact that it is WAY too hot to bake anything right now), when a comment was left on one of my posts.  Instantly, I feel rejuvenated.  It is a great feeling as a blogger when you can realize you are not just writing posts for yourself, but there are actually people reading your posts!

This fact has many ramifications.  Since there is a realization that people might actually be reading your blogs, as an inspiring blogger one feels a sense of urgency to write more.

Also, it is also a motivating factor to want to improve your writing on your blog.  Not any more is your blog just a personal diary, but it is actually reaching people.  Just imagine how better you would write in your journal when you know someone is going to read it.

So, for all you inspiring bloggers out there, keep writing!
